Jesus plus

When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. – I Cor 2:1-5

Paul is giving instruction to a church. Among other things, there seems to have been some division on who the church was following. Some were saying they were better than others because the were baptized by this person or that. They were influenced by a certain person, so they must be better. They must be right.

Paul just lays it down. The messengers are nothing, the wisdom is nothing. The real deal is Jesus. Period. Nothing more.

The recent stuff with Ted Haggard has hit me pretty hard. I have met Ted, read a book he wrote, been to his church, even talked briefly one afternoon with one of his staff.

product review: Mama Bear Acoustic Preamp

We got our hands on one of the hottest acoustic guitar products: the Mama Bear acoustic guitar preamp from D-Tar (Duncan Turner Acoustic Research). The Mama Bear has been making quite a name for itself among acoustic players. In a market that is saturated with modeling amps for electric players, D-Tar is banking on acoustic artists to jump on the sonic bandwagon.

The premise of the Mama Bear is pretty simple. With one knob you dial in your pick-up configuration (tell it what pickup you are using). With another control you dial in a target instrument (16 different guitar choices). Say you play a 1999 Taylor 514. Dial that pickup configuration in as your source. Want to get a hallow body archtop jazz guitar? Dial in number 12 and give a listen. A slope-shouldered jumbo? Number 9. For the full menu, take a look at the complete source and target choices.

You are able to blend from wet to dry, varying the mixture of the source sound and the target sound. This means that the possibilities are quite overwhelming.

Is it worth purchasing?

Trust

“If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,‘ – Job 31:24

This verse stings. Job is in the middle of his life crisis, where everything is taken away and he is left with a choice: be bitter or trust God. He once had everything. He now has nothing.

I know I would have been thinking, “OK, my life is a mess. When I had some money, it was better. It won’t solve everything, but it will bring some security.”

Job has been there. Done that. He knows that security can only come from God. What a deep lesson.

I Feel Alone

Then everyone deserted him and fled. – Mark14:50

Jesus had just come from the most intense time of prayer to date in the Garden of Gethsemane. He took a break from praying and returned to Peter, James, and John. My guess is hat Jesus was hoping to find them praying with the same intensity as Jesus. Instead of finding three friends engaged in an intense spiritual battle, he found them sleeping. That had to be a kick in the gut.

Jesus is soon surrounded by guards. They come and arrest him. The disciples leave. Everyone of them. Jesus was without human companionship at a most crucial time. Another kick.

Sometimes I wonder if Jesus can really identify with some of my struggles. Among other things, I wonder of he can really understand what it is to feel alone and abandoned. I don’t feel much a sense of being totally alone. I have in the past. In those times, can he really identify with what I am feeling? He can.

Maybe it is in the pressures of life that I can be the closest to Christ. in suffering, I meet the one who suffered.

seeing clearly

So I am driving to work. Driving and praying. Just sharing some things with God as they come on my mind. Somewhere in the middle of that conversation, I get to thinking of what it would be like if someone came up and gave me a big check. (My mind wanders much of the time). I think to myself, “If I get a big check today, I will give half of it away.” I’m thinking if someone hands me a check for ten grand, it would be easy to give it away. Has never happened. Safe bet. Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to make these promises when there is no real money on the table? Still, I thought, “Yea, I could give it away.”

I sensed the spirit of God say “Really? If that is really what you would do, say it out loud.”

the pursuit

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. Mark 8:29-32

Jesus begins a different dimension with the disciples. A different relationship. he began to let them in on his death and resurrection. For the first time, he reveals the pivotal point of history.

Why then? Why not when he first recruited the disciples?

“OK guys, here is the deal: If you follow me it’s going to be an adventure. It will be incredibly demanding. It will demand everything. We will be together about three years. I will be handed over to leaders on some trumped up charges. I will be killed. Three days later I will come back to life. I will then return to heaven and you will establish my church with the help of the Holy Spirit. Oh, and you will be persecuted. Who’s in?”
