Lookin’ in the wrong place

Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” – Luke 17:20-21

I can remember our first motorcycle, a Honda Trail 70. My uncle had it. His kids were grown and out of the house. One day, during a visit, he said “I should bring that bike down and let you guys have it, since my kids are gone.” I wanted to scream “YES! YES, YOU SHOULD!” What is cooler than having your own dirt bike as a kid? My uncle left that day and I continued to think about the bike. He would visit again, but no bike. Hmm, maybe next time. Every time he would visit I would look for the bike. No luck. I kept looking, waiting to unlock the world of motorcycling.

One spring day he pulled up and poking out the back of his Olds station wagon was the Trail 70. Score.

product review: Taylor big baby

A small group at church just ordered a Big Baby Taylor as a gift for an overseas friend. We will deliver it to him soon, but while it is running through our hands we gave it a test drive.

Taylor guitars have always been a favorite of mine. I have played numerous models belonging to friends, enemies, and music stores. Currently, my main guitar (a workhorse) is a Taylor 710KCE. Taylor has been making some quality instruments and if money were no object, I would have a room full.

I first played the Big Baby in a local music store and was blown away by the sound. After the first strum, I stopped to make sure that I had not mistakenly picked up a different model.

Bad Security

Then the angel who was speaking to me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, but I am very angry with the nations that feel secure. I was only a little angry, but they added to the calamity.’ – Zechariah 1:14-15

God is angry with those who feel secure? It appears that there were nations that were so secure in themselves that they had little need for God. I shake my head at their ignorance until I realize that my own securities drive me further away from God.

I find certain areas of my life where I am secure. I have led worship a long time and there are parts of that job I can do easily and under my own power. Because I am secure, I can get over confident. Why pray for help and favor? I’ve done this before, I have this covered. What a dangerous place to be. I think that it part of the reason I took on the teaching role. I knew I was way over my head. I knew to do that, I desperately needed God.
