King of Pranks

Amber Gentry has been around MCC and exchange long enough to know better. She came first as a college student and now is a part time Children’s Ministry Staffer while she works on her masters. Amber is a wonderful young lady with one glaring fault: She picked the wrong person to prank. Enter Jack Fox. Jack is one of my best friends and the Associate Pastor of Exchange. One day, Amber decides to fill Jack’s office with cups full of water. Actually 364 cups, 100 straws, and 4 gallons of water. She thought it was funny. I thought it suicidal. Doing something like this to Jack is like walking up to Dog the Bounty Hunter, kicking him in the groin and thinking that nothing will happen.

So Jack waits, and plots. And waits. The return prank, and beginning of the avalanche, was Thursday night. Jack was finishing his artist reception at The Coffee Ground (side note: Jack’s art is flat out groovy). Jack, myself, and Jeff Gormong instructed Amber to head down to the Terre Haute parking Garage and wait outside for Jody to show up with name tags for Blues Fest staff. Amber went, evidently not realizing that the Blues Fest was TWO DAYS AWAY. About 40 minutes of sitting in front of the parking garage, she figures something is up. Mess with Jack, you mess with his blokes. We instruct her that it is just the beginning.

Worship Leading Essentials #2 – Letting Go

At last count, there was at least 25 things blasting through my mind as I led worship. Is my guitar in tune? How is the tempo? Is everyone participating? Is that guy picking his nose? Sounds like the keys missed a note. Are the vocals loud enough? What is the next song? I think I forgot the transition coming up . . . . The list never ends. Let your mind run away and you can fry yourself on the matrix of details, resulting in a less than adequate worship leading experience.

So the real question is: How do you deal with all the details and actually worship while you are leading?

My evaluation:

“Obsession” is one of my all-time favorite songs but maybe a bit low energy to kick the gathering off. It didn’t bring much push going into the welcome and announcement time. The powerpoint video from the High Schoolers was good in that it gave some promo to the ministry, but could have used some more action/mission shots. Teaching was rushed but the interview in the middle was the highlight (props to Jen, Jody, and John).

Worship Leading Essentials #1 – Setting the Base

My great friend and worship leader, Shawn Wallace (pictured here flippin’ the wax at our Easter gathering), IMs me and asks this: “What are your top suggestions for an aspiring worship leader?” That started me thinking. In this series of articles I will share some of the things I have learned along the way, mostly by trial and error. Lot’s of trial, even more error. I have had the opportunity to lead worship for about 20 years and have made a fair share of discoveries. In this series, we will unearth some of those discoveries, and probably have some laughs along the way.

My Name is Heaven

That's what she said. "My name is heaven." I was sitting at Ryves Hall ,a ministry in the avenues that reaches out to kids that are overlooked and ignored. Each day tons of kids pour in this…
